Captain Morgan

My client requested a recreation of the Guy on the Rum Bottle. He managed to find the wig but hadn't gotten the mustache and beard yet.

Since Captain Morgan was a 17th century man but the Rum Guy is wearing 18th century attire, I made a pattern which had elements of both periods.

I made everything he is wearing except the boots and sword. The costume contains over 20 yards of 1 inch wide metal thread military braid. The coat is Melton wool with cotton sateen lining. The breeches and cape are wool with silk lining the cape. The linen shirt and neck tie are crisp and comfortable.

Making a red pirate hat from scratch was a real challenge. I got a cartwheel from a hat supply place, blocked the crown, attached the brim and wired the edge. Then I had to sew the metal braid on and shape the brim into a tricorn. Whew!

The red leather boot tops have a nice sheen. The other leather work (belt and baldrick) were not too difficult to make from belt-weight leather. Fortunately, I had the tools and hardware I needed.
